The axolotl is an animal that is only found in one place in the world, Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City. They live entirely in the air and never leave their natural habitat. The axolotl’s wide mouth and facial features make it appear to be always smiling, hence the nickname “the smiling salamander” [2]. In the wild, axolotls range in color from dark to white and pink, especially those kept in aquariums are usually brightly colored. The population of axolotls in the wild has declined drastically due to habitat destruction, pollution, and invasive predators such as tilapia. They are now listed as critically endangered.
Axolotls actually do not have teeth, so their faces look very cute and like a baby smiling sweetly. Although they are actually amphibians, axolotls are often called “Mexican walking fish” because of their body shape and the way they move in the water. Although cute and small, axolotls can live quite a long time if they are well cared for, up to 10-15 years.
