How To Draw a Cute Capybara

We at ColorWee love capybaras. If you would like to draw your own cappy and then color it, you are in the right place. We have prepared an easy 10-step tutorial that shows you how to draw one of the cutest rodents out there.

Did you know that capybaras are among the most peaceful animals on Earth? They have very few natural enemies, which allows them to live calmly alongside many other species. Monkeys, birds, and even animals you would not expect often sit, rest, or travel together with capybaras. Almost everyone seems to be a friend of cappy.

You can watch the entire process in one YouTube video, or you can follow a step-by-step tutorial in the form of images below. It is completely up to you which option you choose.

What do you need to draw and color a capybara?

Not much, really.

  • Coloring markers for finishing touches
  • Pencil
  • Paper

Step 1: Draw the capybara head

Start by drawing a rounded C shape that looks like a unfinished oval . This will be the head of your capybara. Do not worry about making it perfect. Keep the lines light so you can adjust them later.

Step 2: Draw the ears

On top of the head, add two small rounded ears. Capybara ears are short and simple, so keep them small and close to the head.

Step 3: Draw the eyes

Draw a small circle for the eye on the side of the head. Add a tiny dot inside to create a friendly and curious expression.

Step 4: Start drawing capybara body

From the head, draw a long curved line going backward to form the capybara’s back. Then draw another curved line underneath to create the belly. Capybaras have big, rounded bodies, so keep the shape wide and smooth.

Step 5: Draw the front legs

Under the body, draw the front legs using short vertical lines. Add small rounded feet at the bottom. Capybara legs are short compared to their body.

Step 7: Draw the back legs

Draw the back legs slightly larger and thicker than the front legs. This helps show the capybara’s strong body shape.

Step 8: Finish the feet

Add toes to each foot using small curved lines. Keep the details simple so the drawing stays cute and clean.

Step 9: Add final details

Go over your drawing and clean up the lines. Add small details like ear lines and extra curves to make the body look smooth and natural.

Step 10: Color the capybara

Now it is time to color your capybara. Use light brown, beige, or tan shades. You can also leave it black and white if you want a printable coloring page.
