Why Is the Rainbow a Symbol of Pride? 🌈

The rainbow became the symbol of LGBTQ+ pride in 1978 when artist and activist Gilbert Baker created the first rainbow Pride flag in San Francisco. He was encouraged by civil rights leader Harvey Milk to design a positive symbol that could represent the LGBTQ+ community. Baker chose the rainbow because it naturally shows many different colors existing together, which beautifully reflects the diversity of people, identities, and experiences within the community.

The original flag actually had eight colors, and each color had its own meaning such as life, healing, sunlight, nature, and spirit. Over time the design was simplified to the six color rainbow flag that is widely recognized today.

Today the rainbow Pride flag is displayed around the world during Pride Month and at pride celebrations, where it represents diversity, unity, equality, and the freedom to be yourself
