Baby ducklings coloring pageYes, a baby duck can follow you, especially if it has imprinted on you. Ducklings naturally follow a parent or other moving figure soon after hatching because staying close helps keep them safe.
If a duckling is raised by a human during this early period, it may begin treating that person like its parent. It can walk behind you, call when you leave, and try to stay close whenever you move around.
This behavior is called imprinting. It happens very early in a duckling’s life and can create a strong attachment. That is why videos sometimes show baby ducks following people through houses, yards, or farms.
But encouraging a wild duckling to imprint on a human is usually a bad idea. A wild duck needs to learn normal behavior from other ducks, including how to find food, avoid danger, and interact with its own species. Too much human attachment can make release into the wild more difficult.
Domestic ducklings can also become attached to people, but they still need other ducks for normal social behavior. A human should not replace the flock.
