You look at a red panda and it’s hard not to wonder what’s going on behind those eyes. They’re not just cute, they’re kind of odd, honestly. Most people figure giant pandas came first, but red pandas had the name before anyone even thought about the big black-and-white ones.
They’ve got this weird wrist bone—sort of like a thumb, but not really—that lets them grab bamboo and hang on tight. Bamboo’s their main thing, but if you watch long enough, you’ll see them go for fruit, acorns, roots, and sometimes even a bird egg or a bug. Makes you think about what you’d draw in their paws—maybe a berry, maybe something you wouldn’t expect.
They live up in the trees, and that tail isn’t just for looks. It’s heavy, almost as long as their body, and they use it for balance, or just wrap up in it when the wind picks up.
